Former FBI director James the ex-FBI chief has denied the charges to giving untrue testimony to lawmakers and impeding a lawmaking procedure.

The former director's lawyer filed the plea representing him in a federal court in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday.

His attorney stated he would seek to have the case dismissed for multiple causes including that his the accused, a opponent of former President Trump, was being singled out.

Mr Comey was charged just days after Donald Trump pressured his chief prosecutor to proceed against him.

Court Developments

In court on mid-week, Comey's lawyer the legal representative told the court they aimed to file several legal requests to terminate the case before a legal hearing, stating the prosecution was retaliatory and that a US attorney was unlawfully appointed to take over the proceedings.

The former director's proceedings was originally overseen by a Virginia prosecutor, who resigned under scrutiny from the former president after his probe into an additional rival - NY AG Letitia James - was unable to file indictments.

Judicial Environment

James Comey appeared in good spirits as he came into the courtroom on mid-week, chatting with his attorneys and sharing humor. He was joined by his wife, his wife and child Maureen Comey, a government attorney who the Trump administration dismissed.

Upon hearing to the judge state his constitutional guarantees and the two counts against him in legal proceedings on mid-week, the defendant was questioned if he comprehended the charges.

Background Context

The former director was the chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigation from 2013-2017 and was dismissed about several months into the former president's initial presidency as national leader. At the moment, the director was overseeing an examination into foreign election meddling and whether there were any relationships between Moscow and the presidential campaign.

Throughout his leadership, Mr Comey caused a backlash from the Democratic party when he announced just shortly prior to the 2016 presidential election that he was probing political contender Clinton's use of a personal email system. Indictments against Clinton were not pursued, leading to negative feedback from the Republican party as well.

Current Allegations

Prosecutors assert Mr Comey lied to US lawmakers during a legislative proceeding in 2020 when he was being questioned about both the previous examination as well as the election interference investigation. They say he misled the legislative body by saying he had not authorized someone at the FBI to release to journalistic entities information about the government examinations.

Legal representatives also allege Mr Comey of "improperly attempting to influence, block and impede" the committee by providing untrue information to it.

In a video the former director shared to his social media after he was indicted, he declared he was innocent and charged Donald Trump of acting like a "dictator".

"We have known for years that there are consequences to opposing Mr Trump," he commented. "We choose not to live on our knees."

"I have done nothing wrong," he added. "So let's have a court case."

These allegations against Mr Comey came after Trump shared on digital channels demanding his top legal official, Ms Bondi, take legal action against Mr Comey and others.
